Smoky Grilled Tomatoes

May 23, 2014 · by Valentina · 2 Comments

This Smoky Grilled Tomato Recipe is a great way to enhance the flavor of tomatoes during their off season, so imagine how amazing they are when they're in season. Smoked tomato slices are a delicious addition to soups, stews, sandwiches and more!Stack of Smoky Grilled Tomatoes on parchment paper.

Inspiration for Smoky Grilled Tomatoes

I tend to add the word "smoky" to my recipe titles a lot.  The words "delicious" and "smoky" are synonyms. (In my own culinary mind, anyway.) And therefore, adding smoky (or delicious, if you will), flavors to food elevates them to a higher level.

I love tomatoes -- even when they're not at the peak of their season. While they're not quite as sweet and juicy, there are ways to enhance them, like grilling or smoking them -- or both! This recipe is of course delicious when tomatoes are as sweet as can be too, it's just that, that's when I'm more likely to just slice and eat. Know what I mean? 😉

How to Use Them

First, I want to point out, I didn't actually "smoke" the tomatoes -- meaning, a smoker, wood chips, etc. were not involved. In this case, the smokey flavor comes from the grill and smoked sea salt.

  • When I made these grilled tomatoes the other night, I mixed them into an avocado salad and it was amazing. Just avocado slices mixed with these tomatoes would be a delicious salad in and of itself.
  • They're also fantastic to add to a burger, grilled meat, chicken or fish -- and they can certainly stand on their own as a delightful side dish.
  • The tomato slices are fabulous mixed into meat stews and all kinds of soups.
  • One of my favorite ways to serve these is to add a slice of two to roasted garlic bread. It makes for a super tasty appetizer.

Smoky Grilled Tomato Recipe

This Smoky Grilled Tomato Recipe is a great way to enhance the flavor of tomatoes during their off season, so imagine how amazing they are when they're in season. Smoked tomato slices are a delicious addition to soups, stews, sandwiches and more!

*This recipe serves 6, using 6 approximately 4-ounce tomatoes.

  • 6 medium-small tomatoes (approximately 4-ounces each) (washed and dried, cut into approximately ½-inch thick slices)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • smoked sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  1. Preheat a stove-top grill or the BBQ. (If you're using a BBQ, be sure the openings in the grate aren't too big -- tomatoes are delicate.)

  2. Add the tomato slices to a large plate or baking sheet, and drizzle both sides with olive oil. Then lightly sprinkle both sides with the smoked salt and pepper.
  3. Once it's very hot, gently place the tomatoes on the grill. You should hear a sizzling sound — if you don’t, wait! You won’t get a nice char on the tomatoes if it’s not hot enough. Grill just until the bottoms are nicely marked, and then flip them over to mark the other sides. (This should take about 3 minutes.)
  4. Season to taste with more of the smoked salt if necessary.

You can use larger tomatoes if you'd like.

Calorie count is only an estimate.

Holy smokes! Look at all those titles! This looks amazing, but I thought for sure it would have chipotle powder in it. Wrong again. 🙂
