How to Cut an Avocado

May 26, 2012 · by Valentina · 7 Comments

This step-by-step photo guide will take you through a very easy method to learn how to cut an avocado.an avocado cut in half with pit still intact

Avocados, without question, deserve their time in the spotlight.

A perfect avocado is absolutely stunning and unbelievably delicious.

Most of us love avocados, and I'm sure have cut many of them for various uses.

How to cut an avocado may seem obvious -- but, there are several ways to do it.

How to Peel and Cut an Avocado

- Use a paring knife to cut around the center of the avocado, lengthwise. Rotate the avocado around slowly to move your knife completely around the pit until you have two clean halves.

- Hold the avocado half that contains the pit gently on your work surface (not in your hand!), and use the knife to remove it. With a bit of force, start with your knife slightly elevated and chop into the pit. avocado half with pit being removed

- Gently lift the knife, twisting it a bit, and the pit should easily come with it. Use a towel to remove the pit from the knife (not your bare hands!) pit lifting out of avocado with paring knife

- Place both avocado halves round side up on your work surface, and cut about ¼ inch off of each end.

Tips

  • Avocados are slippery — to keep the slices intact, use a flat-bottomed spatula to move them to your serving plate or to the dish you’re adding them to.
  • A few small dark spots on avocados are not uncommon, and they're okay to eat. Just cut them off if you want to.
  • Try your best not to cut the avocado while it's in your hand. Sounds like common sense, but people do it all the time and it's very dangerous. Avocados are among the long list of foods that will probably send us to the emergency room for a serious hand injury

Once you learn how to cut an avocado, you'll be adding them to all sorts of recipes.

Peeled and Cut Avocado

  • paring knife
  • 1 whole avocado
  1. Use a paring knife to cut around the center of the avocado, lengthwise. Rotate the avocado around slowly to move your knife completely around the pit until you have two clean halves.

  2. Hold the avocado half that contains the pit gently on your work surface (not in your hand!), and use the knife to remove it. 3. Place both avocado halves round side up on your work surface. Cut about ¼ inch off of each end.

  4. Use your hands to gently peel the skin off the avocado. (If it doesn't come off easily, you can use a spoon to scoop it out -- all in one piece, if possible.)

  5. Round side up, slice the avocado to the desired thickness. From there, you can also cut it into any size dice you'd like. (Avocados are slippery — to keep the slices intact, use a flat-bottomed spatula to move them to your serving plate or to the dish you’re adding them to.)

Beautiful guide to cutting an avocado! It's a little easier if you cut the avocado into quarters before you start to peel...but then you don't get a perfect avocado half either. Those perfectly peeled halves are sooo pretty! Thanks for the gorgeous post!

Cool! I will say the challenge is often removing the seed from the knife...safely! The towel method does work!!
